(not for the faint of heart)
It takes a long time to make your Awesome Thing into a Thing That Works Like A Well-Oiled Machine.
Now, if you plan to stay a solopreneur forever, or if you actually enjoy winging it all the time, then this isn’t something you ever need to worry about (and there’s nothing wrong with that!).
But if you dream of someday hiring someone (or someones) to:
+ check your email for you so that you can spend your mornings waking up and thinking happy thoughts about your day; or
+ do the invoicing for you so that you can spend your creative time being awesome at what you do; or
+ talk to new potential clients to see if they’re a good fit; or
+ take on some of the work you do so that your time is more free to be EXTRA awesome;
Then you have to change your way of seeing the work you do, and the reasons you have for doing it.
You have to think in terms of sustainability, and not what will be the quickest dollar possible (although that is still part of it).
You cannot spread work and wealth around to others when you yourself are still afraid there is not enough money, or that you will never have enough money.
You have to look at your marketing, and the way you talk about your work to others.
You have to stop answering questions like you’re the only one doing anything, and begin to consciously rely on the support and wisdom of your team.
You have to start thinking like a person who is in charge of things, and act like a person who is in charge of things. You have to expect to be asked questions and questions and more questions, because you’re The Boss Person now. You have to decide WHAT KIND of Boss Person you want to be, and then act like that. Even when you’re having a bad day; I’m not kidding on this one.
You have to realize that the buck still stops with you, even though there are numerous options open to you now that you’re not the only person around to deal with things.
You have to understand that this will all take longer than you think it should.
You have to believe that it’s worth it, and you have to give yourself permission to take breaks ANYWAY, even though it never seems done.
And lastly, you have to realize that you are a superstar, a legend in the making, a philanthropist and an energizing force in the universe. Own it. Never forget it.

Mondo smartnesses here.
And I think you’re totally right. There is a switcheroo that’s really important to make if you want to hire other people to help with your business.
I like how you laid this out. And how you mentioned the it’ll-take-longer-than-you-think-it-should thing. There’s something really helpful about hearing that.
Thanks for the fabulousness.

You’re welcome! Obviously, I learned all this from trying really hard to do it the right way. And from lots and LOTS of good advice. :)
I think you’re a pretty kickass Boss Person ;)

AWW. *blush*
Thanks Matt. You are a kickass ninja. :)
Yes, yes, yes! It’s so easy to get caught up in the trees, you forget the forest. It’s all about deciding what the goal is. Great stuff!
Kathleen Jaffe´s last blog ..What’s your motivation
Hi Rachel–Not sure how I stumbled upon your blog but this post couldn’t be more helpful for where I’m at right now. I just took on some “help” and yet I find myself still living in the mindset that I’m responsible for everything. I guess it takes time and a shift in consciousness (like the one you describe in the post) to change the old ways of thinking. I LOVE the part about giving yourself permission to take breaks even though the work never seems done. I’ve got to start doing that.
And all the rest of it too. thanks.
love your posts…they just keep getting better! keep em’ coming!
Hi Rachael
I came across from Thu’s site as she highly recommended your post. As a fairly newbie blogger I love the roundups cos I get to meet other bloggers and learn more. Love your site so definitely will be on my list of blogs to revisit.
I am learning to be patient with my blog and have been a part of the commentluv community for awhile. Tthey have been a great encouragement to me and helped me tremendously with learning things I need to know to set up my home business. Also they visit and comment on my site and give me techie help when I need it.
Persevering and being patient is a must with a new blog and I am determined to keep on keeping on till I am established and being succesful.
Thanks for sharing.
